Agencies & marketing
How to find clients for web design & development
Local businesses with no website, a dead one, or one that is plainly out of date are the warmest prospects: the problem is visible and easy to show them.
For agencies and freelancers who build or rebuild websites. Six steps, from the first search to the last follow-up.
- 1
Search Google Maps for these businesses
Run each search in the city you sell to. These are the trades that buy this most.

Keep the ones that are ready to buy
- No Website
- No website anywhere on its listing: a search finds a map pin and a phone number.
- Social Only
- Its only home online is a social profile, such as a Facebook page.
- Dead Website
- It lists a website, but the site did not load when it was read.
- Site Unreachable
- The inspection could not reach the site at all.
- Outdated Design
- The site still runs Flash or jQuery 1, or its footer year is four or more years old.
- Outdated CMS
- It runs an old major version of its CMS, such as WordPress 5.7 or earlier.
- No Mobile Version
- The page sets no mobile viewport, so a phone gets the desktop layout shrunk down.
- No SSL
- The site is served without HTTPS, so browsers mark it "Not secure".
Leave out: Highly rated businesses that already have a modern, mobile-friendly site.
- 3
Open on the right channel
No website usually means no email: open on WhatsApp or by calling the Maps number. A weak or outdated site usually publishes an email: use email, with one line about what you noticed on their site.
- 4
Lead with one thing you noticed
- Customers searching on Google cannot find you — or find a site that looks closed.
- Most visitors are on phones and the site does not fit the screen.
- Browsers show a "Not secure" warning on the site.
- Competitors on the same street have a modern site that takes bookings.
- 5
Send an opener like this one
Opening messageHighlighted parts are filled in for each businessHi contact name, I came across business name on Google Maps — great reviews, but I couldn't find a website for you. I build fast, simple sites for local businesses in city so customers can call or book in one tap. Would a free mockup of what yours could look like be useful? Best, sender name

Follow up twice, then stop
- Day 3: share a one-screen mockup or a before/after from a similar business.
- Day 7: one short question — is a new website on the list this year, or should I check back later?
